This is what a depressed person looks like

Sufferers of chronic depression become amazing actors, and present a face to the world which can be far from a reflection of how they feel inside. Putting up a front like this is exhausting and can exacerbate the frazzling of the debilitated mind.

"How are you going to make something of yourself?"

It may sound wise to advise our kids to make plans for their future, but with some young people applying this kind of pressure only adds to their anxiety about facing the years ahead as an adult. It can be useful to reflect on how the teenage years can be bewildering, with some finding the transition from child to adult confusing, overwhelming and scary. The fact is that most people get to where they're going to get to, regardless of whether they had a plan at 16 or not, as long as they have been raised in a stable, loving environment. Should we not just try to make their journey as happy and anxiety-free as possible?

Can there be anything more horrific than suffering from depression when you are exhausted and expected to be happily enjoying the arrival of your little miracle. The excitement of family and friends must make the mother's suffering all the more acute and their thoughts all the more bewildering. There is a lot of people out there suffering with mental health problems who think all their days will be grey, but life can improve again and you will start to enjoy the little things again."
